About the role

Our payments backend processes millions of transactions and settlements every month.

We need a Backend Engineer who cares about correctness, reliability, and building systems that merchants can trust with their money. You'll work on everything from card transaction processing and reconciliation to the APIs that power our dashboard and EPOS terminals. This is a hands-on role in a team that values simplicity and operational discipline.

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain APIs consumed by the dashboard, EPOS apps, and third-party integrations.
  • Own transaction processing flows — authorisation, settlement, refunds, and dispute handling.
  • Design data models that support accurate financial reporting at scale.
  • Instrument services with logging, metrics, and alerting so issues surface before merchants notice.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and own incidents from detection through to postmortem.
  • Review code and contribute to architectural decisions with the wider engineering team.

What we're looking for

  • 4+ years of backend engineering experience in a production environment.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one of: Go, Python, or Node.js.
  • Experience designing and maintaining REST or event-driven APIs at scale.
  • Solid understanding of relational databases — schema design, query optimisation, migrations.
  • A track record of building reliable, observable services in a cloud environment.
  • The right to work in the UK. We cannot sponsor visas for this role.

Nice to Have

Experience with payments rails — card schemes, ISO 8583, or open banking.

Familiarity with message queues such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.

Background in fintech, banking, or regulated financial services.
